| Istiea |
ISTIEAThe main town in north-west Evia with about 5,000, residents. It is set in a fertile farming area to the north of the spa town of Edipsos and is steeped in history. To the west of the town are the ancient remains of Hisitaia which was conquered by Perikles in 446BC and bound to Athens by the foundation of a colony at nearby Orei. Homer described Istiea as "polystafylon" (land of many vines). According to ancient legend this is where the sacred bulls of the goddess Hera grazed. Bird watchers will wish to go the bay near Kanatadika, an important natural reserve for migratory and endemic birds. The forest around Mount Telethrio has some spectacular scenery.
